This past week I have tried as hard as I could to stay away from stories about the Amish community that was so tragically impacted by violence this week. However there is a side of the story that has captured my attention; the capacity of the Amish community to forgive. This CNN Story blew me away. Apparently, about 1/2 of the people who attended the killer's funeral were from the Amish community. They were there to lend their support to the killer's family.
WTF? That is unheard of in or times. I have always thought that the Amish community was a little strange. Nice and wholesome and harmless, but just very different from my reality. I wonder what it is about how they are that makes them have such an incredible capacity to forgive. What is it that gives them such a strong moral fiber? Some might argue that it is unnatural, that they don't live in reality. But today, right now, I am so admiring their peace and forgiveness and compassion. In this effed up world we live in, I think that we could take a page from whatever book they are reading and use it to make us and our reality a little more humane.
