My 13 year old has a girlfriend.
For the first time ever. She is the first girl that has ever shown an interest in him and he is LOVING IT! The good news is that she lives with her Mom out of state and is just here for the summer (read: going home in a few days) and is just here for the summer with her Dad. Don’t get me wrong, I am THRILLED that she has shown an interest in him. His self-esteem has sky-rocketed. It is, however, nice that his focus can return to school when it needs to.
It has been a huge effort to accomodate all of the things he has wanted to do (movies etc.) while maintaining some order and balance in his life. I hear the song “Summer Lovin’” in my head as they are preparing to part company. It has been hard to “keep him real” to the fact that he is 13. How “serious” can it be… really. But I remember having a big summer crush at that age and it feels just as serious and real as anything else. I want to take him seriously while keeping things in perspective. His feelings are real.
His voice is also changing. He is my youngest and the sound of sweet little voices is gone from the house. I now have very sweet big voices in my life. They melt my heart every day. It’s just these damn hormones that keep things changing!
Stay tuned for the trials and tribulations of my oldest getting his driving permit in the next couple of weeks.
