Had to share this with you. I know it's way past Christmas, but I had hoped to take a photo of this myself and then blog about it. But alas, no such luck. I happened on this photo on flickr; it's my lucky day. This our "Christmas Street" in San Carlos. The whole block is amazing, but this house in particular rocks.
It belongs to a book club friend of mine and every year it amazes us. They truck in snow and dump it all over the yard. They also have to have the utility company install a temporary additional power pole to handle all of the power needed. They own the house next door, too and the two of them together are just stunning. Excess? For sure. Fun to see ever year? You betcha!

There are always those whose statements actually say more.
I'm still trying to figure out what the cut tree branches and pine cones placed in the planter boxes at this time of year, as the trees come down, really say on the NYC residential streets.
Is it a way to "recycle"? Is it a way to extend the holiday? Is it mulch for the bulbs?
Still figuring this one out.

Hey - thanks for linking to my photo and for the credit line. Not to mention how amazing that Twinga linked to the same one.

We have a street here in Portland that is only a couple of blocks long called Peacock Lane, tucked into an older city neighborhood. I think it was back in the early 1940s that someone started the tradition of decorating their house for Christmas along the street, and pretty soon everyone was doing it. Houses don't come up for sale very often there, but if you do purchase one I've heard there's some kind of clause in the contract where you have to agree to decorate the house every Christmas. It truly IS a winter wonderland -- and a traffic nightmare because everybody and their brother crawls down it ooohing and ahhhhing over the beautiful decorations. We took our kids there a couple of times when they were little and they LOVED it!
